What makes organic cotton different?

From cultivation to finished product

According to textile standards, the terms “bio” or “organic” may only be used responsibly on labels if a certification (e.g. GOTS or OCS) verifies both the proportion of organic fibres and the way the textile has been processed; under GOTS, the “organic” label requires at least 95% organic fibre content, while the “made with organic materials” claim requires at least 70%.

Organic cotton typically produces fabrics that are softer, more breathable and highly absorbent; the natural fibre structure allows excellent air circulation and moisture wicking, which helps reduce the formation of a damp, irritating microclimate on the skin.

A common argument in favour of organic cotton clothing is that the fibres are grown without synthetic agrochemicals or with only minimal, non‑synthetic inputs, resulting in lower levels of pesticide and fertiliser residues — a particular benefit for people with sensitive skin.

The mechanical properties of the fibre – tensile strength and abrasion resistance – are just as good as in conventional cotton, and in the case of longer‑staple organic varieties (such as Pima or Egyptian cotton) garments are often even more durable, less prone to pilling and offer a distinct, premium feel.

The percentage thresholds mentioned above correspond to current GOTS labelling rules for “organic” and “made with organic materials” products.

Cultivation

In conventional cotton farming, synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are typically used, whereas in organic cotton cultivation these inputs are prohibited or strictly limited, and soil fertility is maintained through natural methods such as crop rotation and organic amendments.

Several life‑cycle assessments suggest that producing organic cotton can significantly reduce both surface and groundwater use, primarily due to lower irrigation demand.

This is partly because organic systems improve soil structure and organic‑matter content, allowing the soil to retain moisture more effectively, which reduces the need for irrigation and makes rain‑fed cultivation more common.

In certified organic cotton production, synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are not allowed, and the soil must be free from such prohibited inputs for at least three years before the crop can be marketed as organic.

Genetically modified (GM) cotton seeds are also banned; pest and weed management relies on biological, mechanical and agroecological practices, such as crop rotation, mulching and encouraging beneficial organisms.

The overarching goal of organic farming is to improve soil fertility and structure – increasing organic‑matter levels, water‑holding capacity and reducing erosion – which in the long term supports more stable yields while helping to lower overall water demand.

Processing and Manufacturing

In textile processing, the key difference is that fabrics made from certified organic cotton are subject to much stricter rules on which chemicals, auxiliaries and technologies may be used.

Under GOTS, all major wet‑processing stages – scouring, washing, bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing – are regulated, and only pre‑approved chemical inputs are permitted.
